How Does Turo Use Auto Insurance Score?

Turo uses an Auto Insurance Score (AIS) to determine whether or not to allow you to rent a car on the Turo platform. Turo gets the AIS from TransUnion, and disputes regarding the AIS must be filed with TransUnion.

The Best Way To Save On Insurance Is To Get A New Quote

Are you creating a profile on Turo to rent a car? Find out how Turo uses an Auto Insurance Score to determine eligibility for rentals! We did the research and collected the answers you need in one place.

This article will explain what an Auto Insurance Score is and how to dispute yours. We’ll also look at factors that may lower your Auto Insurance Score. So keep reading to get your answers!

Your Auto Insurance Score & Turo

Turo uses the Auto Insurance Score (AIS) available for potential customers through TransUnion. Based on the AIS, Turo decides whether or not to allow someone to rent from their platform.

According to Turo, this allows them to keep rental prices low and helps owners feel safe renting out their vehicles. Because of this, disputes regarding the AIS need to be filed with TransUnion, not Turo.

Auto Insurance Score: What It Means

The Auto Insurance Score, or AIS, is based on your credit score, but it is not your credit score. The AIS tells an insurance company or rental company how likely you are to file a claim based on factors found in your credit report.

Insurance policyholders with good Auto Insurance Scores typically enjoy lower insurance premiums. A policyholder with a poor score may pay as much as 91% more for insurance when compared to someone with a good AIS.

What Is Considered a Good Auto Insurance Score?

Auto Insurance Scores range from 200 to 997. Numbers above 770 are considered a good Auto Insurance Score because it indicates you are less likely to file a claim. Scores below 500 are considered poor.

We created this table to make it easy to see where you fall with your Auto Insurance Score.

Why Won’t Turo Let Me Rent?

If Turo doesn’t approve you to rent, it may be because of trust and safety issues, a policy violation, your age, or a low Auto Insurance Score (AIS). If your account is approved by Turo, but you cannot rent, it may be due to another problem.

Turo Won’t Approve My Account, or My Account Was Removed

Turo emails potential customers because their account hasn’t been approved. For customers that have had an account removed, also check your email. In your email regarding your account status, Turo notified you about whether or not their decision to deny or remove your account can be disputed.

The following reasons could be behind Turo’s decision to deny or remove your account.

  • Trust and Safety Issues
  • Low Auto Insurance Score
  • Multiple or linked accounts
  • Policy Violations

My Turo Account is Approved, but I Still Can’t Rent

If your Turo account has been approved and has not been removed, then you will need to verify a few things regarding payments and the eligibility requirements for the selected rental car.

The following items should be checked.

  • Make sure you’re old enough to rent in the selected region or for a specific rental.
  • Check other eligibility requirements like license and communication requirements for the selected rental.
  • Make sure you don’t have outstanding balances on your account. If you do, pay those.
  • Update your payment method if Turo cannot verify your card.

How Do I Get Approved for Turo?

Turo verifies your age, identity, license, and auto insurance score before approving your account. Turo will email you if or when additional verification is needed. For many customers, approval will be issued within 24 hours.

You must supply Turo with the following things for Turo to process your application.

  • Driver’s License: Enter your name and driver’s license number. Don’t enter placeholders or fake numbers.
  • Address: You must list your physical address for your Turo Account. This can be different from your billing address.
  • Current Photo: Upload a picture without sunglasses or a hat that clearly shows your face.
  • Phone Number: Enter a phone number with SMS to verify your contact information.
  • Email Address: Enter an email address for communication and account verification.

How Do I Dispute My Auto Insurance Score?

Unfortunately, for those with a low AIS, Turo cannot change their decision, edit your AIS, or overrule it. To dispute your Auto Insurance Score, you must file a dispute with TransUnion, the credit reporting agency that generated your Auto Insurance Score.

If you receive a corrected Auto Insurance Score from TransUnion after the dispute, you can supply this to Turo for reconsideration.

How Does Auto Insurance Work With Turo?

You will likely need to purchase protection through Turo when you rent. Most auto insurance policies and credit card coverage options have exclusions for peer-to-peer car rentals.

We recommend calling your insurance company or agent to see if your auto insurance will cover a Turo rental.

If your personal insurance does cover a Turo rental, a policy through Turo would provide supplemental liability insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Turo not able to verify my zip code?

Turo may have problems verifying your payment method if the zip code doesn’t match the zip code on the account. Check your account statement for the zip code and check the formatting. You may also try entering the bank’s zip code.

Does renting through Turo require a security Deposit?

How much is required as a security deposit will depend on the location you’re renting a car. Any required deposit will be detailed on the checkout page when you book a trip through Turo.

How long will it take to get approved for Turo?

It takes about 24 hours for Turo to approve new users. Check your email, including your spam folder for any updates or additional verification needed.

Does Turo check my credit score?

Turo looks at your Auto Insurance Score, which is based on factors in your credit score. However, an Auto Insurance Score is not the same as a credit score.
