Full Coverage vs. Liability Insurance Cost

A liability-only insurance policy is cheaper than full coverage because it provides less financial protection. Liability insurance only covers damage you may cause, while a full-coverage policy also insures your vehicle from damage caused by outside factors, such as other drivers.

In the table below is the monthly averages of insurance in Oregon:

Full-coverage policy Liability-only policy
$123.75 $47.49

Research Methodology

We used an Oregon address and basic driver profile to identify which pre-owned vehicles are the least expensive to insure in the state. We entered the address and a profile into an insurance quote generator to acquire insurance quotes.

Based on these quotes, we identified which used vehicles were the cheapest to insure in Oregon.

Basic Driver Profile

  • 35-year-old male with a bachelor’s degree
  • Single and employed full time
  • Homeowner but did not bundle policies
  • Owns the vehicle rather than leases or finances it
  • Has been with the current insurance carrier for five or more years

We used vehicles on the IIHS 2021 Top Safety Pick+ 2021 list. The IIHS is an independent, nonprofit organization that collects safety data for cars on the market.

We used the following limits for liability-only quotes:

  • $100,000/$300,000 liability limits
  • $100,000 property damage limits
  • $10,000 personal injury protection

For the full-coverage quotes, we included the following coverages with the liability selections:

  • $1,000 deductible on collision coverage
  • $1,000 deductible for comprehensive coverage
  • $50/$1,500 rental reimbursement
  • $100 roadside assistance

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest SUV to insure in Oregon?

The Volvo XC40 is the cheapest used SUV to insure in the state of Oregon. Full coverage for the 2021 model only costs $84 a month.

Are older cars cheaper to insure?

Older cars are cheaper to insure because age-related depreciation and high mileage reduce their value. Lower financial risk for the insurance company means lower premiums for the policyholder.

How much liability insurance is required in Oregon?

Oregon mandates that drivers have an insurance policy with a bodily injury limit of $25,000 per person per accident, a total limit minimum of $50,000 per accident, and a minimum property damage coverage of $20,000.

What is the penalty for driving without insurance in Oregon?

Driving without insurance can result in a fine of up to $1,000. Subsequent offenders may face a license suspension of up to a year. Drivers can attain reinstatement by paying the fine and purchasing insurance. The DMV could also require an SR-22 certificate.

What is the basic insurance for a car?

The basic insurance for a vehicle is a liability-only policy, which provides coverage for damage caused by the insured driver. Lenders may require you to have comprehensive coverage, which pays for damage to your car due to unpredictable incidents, such as hitting a deer or encountering a storm.

What car has the highest insurance rates?

Higher insurance rates apply to luxury, rare, or high-performance vehicles, such as sports cars. These vehicles have higher rates because they are more expensive to replace, which means they present a greater financial risk to insurance companies.
