Automotive repairs can be expensive and untimely. An extended warranty can help cover some unexpected vehicle repair costs. CarShield is a third-party service contract provider that can provide you with peace of mind when it comes to expensive vehicle repairs.

What Is a CarShield Warranty?

CarShield is a third-party warranty provider. They sell customizable service contracts that can provide you with the coverage you need to protect your used or new vehicle. A CarShield service contract is similar to an auto warranty, except that it offers coverage beyond the initial period available through your vehicle’s manufacturer. CarShield has six plans available, allowing you to choose the best fit for your budget.

CarShield is a well-known warranty brand that currently has over two million policies. They have paid out over one billion in vehicle claims since they were founded over a decade ago. They’re also well-trusted, with a 4.3/5 rating on Google and a 4.2/5 star rating on Consumer Affairs.

CarShield Plans

You can choose from six CarShield plans, including:

Diamond

The CarShield diamond plan is the most comprehensive and resembles many manufacturers’ new car warranties. The diamond plan covers most parts of a vehicle, including the engine, transmission, drive axles, and transfer case. It also covers many vehicle components that a lot of other warranties don’t cover, including the brake system and instrument cluster.

Platinum

The CarShield platinum plan offers everything that the diamond plan offers except repairs to the wiring harness. The platinum plan includes a wide range of coverage for the GPS, steering, air conditioning, and electrical system. CarShield recommends the platinum plan for policyholders who drive a vehicle with higher mileage.

Gold

The CarShield gold plan covers many of the same components as the diamond and platinum plans but excludes things like the steering, suspension system, and electrical. It covers other expensive parts, like the transfer case, alternator, power windows, and water pump. CarShield recommends the gold plan for used, high-mileage vehicles.

Silver

The CarShield silver plan is the lowest-priced option. This plan covers many essential lubricated parts of the vehicle, including the engine and transmission. The silver plan also covers the water pump. This plan is ideal if you’re looking for coverage at a discounted price.

Aluminum

The CarShield aluminum plan covers electrical and computer repairs. This may include the engine control module or the starter. It also covers the wiring harness and instrument cluster. This plan is ideal for policyholders with luxury vehicles or those with extensive technology systems.

Additional Coverage

CarShield also offers warranty coverage for other vehicle types, including ATVs and motorcycles. They have plans that cover the engine, transmission, drive axle, fuel pump, and more.

Additional Benefits of a CarShield Warranty

In addition to the warranty coverages available with each plan, CarShield also offers the following benefits:

  • Your choice of mechanic: You can choose any ASE-certified mechanic for your repairs.
  • Roadside assistance: All CarShield warranties include 24/7 roadside assistance.
  • Rental car coverage: Most CarShield warranties also cover the cost of a rental car when your vehicle is at the mechanic for a minimum of four service hours.
  • Complimentary towing: All warranties come with complimentary towing, as long as the issue is covered under your plan.

Depending on your claim, some policies may also include trip interruption protection. This covers the cost of travel if your vehicle breaks down more than 100 miles from home.

CarShield Pros and Cons

It’s important to know the pros and cons when choosing the best auto warranty provider. CarShield offers a wide range of plans that accommodate most people’s coverage needs. Many CarShield plans also transfer with the sale of your vehicle, which can increase its resale value. CarShield also offers warranty coverage up to 300,000 miles, which is much longer than most manufacturer warranties.

The biggest downside to a CarShield warranty is that rental reimbursement isn’t always included. While rental car coverage is included with many CarShield plans, your vehicle must require a minimum of four service hours to qualify. CarShield may also require you to pay for the rental upfront and reimburse you later.

Pricing for CarShield’s plans isn’t available online, meaning you’ll have to call them to get your customized quote. However, customers report that CarShield plans are, on average, between $99.99-$129.99 per month. CarShield plans also don’t cover routine maintenance, like oil changes or tire rotations. Most manufacturer warranties also exclude these services.

Do You Need a CarShield Warranty?

A car warranty may be a good investment for some. You don’t need a CarShield warranty if your vehicle is currently covered under another warranty. However, if your warranty is up, you may find that an extended warranty can help you cover expensive costs.

The average cost of an engine replacement is $3,438, and the average cost of a transmission repair is $2,324. With most CarShield plans, your out-of-pocket costs for these repairs would be $0.

How To Buy a CarShield Warranty

If you decide that CarShield is the right warranty provider for you, you can easily purchase a plan online. A CarShield representative will help you choose the right amount of coverage and provide you with a free, customized quote.

CarShield warranties start at $99 per month, but pricing varies based on your vehicle. You’ll need information about your vehicle when requesting a quote, including the VIN. You can pay for your CarShield warranty upfront or split the cost between monthly payments. Once you choose your plan and pay, you’ll be subject to a waiting period.

How To File a CarShield Claim

Filing a warranty claim with CarShield is simple. You can submit your claim and supporting documents online. If your vehicle isn’t drivable, you can call roadside assistance. Once CarShield approves your claim, they’ll send a check directly to the U.S. or Canadian ASE-certified repair shop of your choice. Depending on your plan, you may be subject to a deductible. However, the specific amount of the deductible varies.

Keeping up with routine maintenance is the first step in avoiding expensive repair needs. The FIXD sensor and app can help you track your service needs while also helping you troubleshoot car engine issues.
