What Does P2197 Mean?
The P2197 code is a result of the engine control module (ECM) indicating that the oxygen sensor is fluctuating outside its optimal range. This specified range is characterized by a minimum of 10 cycles per second. This sensor is nicknamed the air/fuel (A/F) ratio sensor, as it monitors the air fuel ratio of the exhaust between the engine and the catalytic converter. This code indicates that the engine could be running lean or that there is a fault in the A/F O2 sensor.

- Check to see if there are any other codes along with P2197 and clear your Check Engine Light with FIXD.
- Conduct a visual inspection of wiring around the oxygen sensor(s) for fraying or disconnection.
- Visually check mass airflow sensor to see if it needs cleaning; clean as needed. Also, verify the air filter is properly installed, has no holes, and does not allow any debris past it.
- Replace vacuum lines or intake air tube if there are signs of cracks or disconnections.
- Check for any exhaust leaks between the engine and the post catalytic O2 sensor. Repair as needed.
- Consider replacing oxygen sensor 1 bank 2 if the check-engine light persists.
