P2197 – Meaning, Causes, Symptoms, & Fixes

What Does P2197 Mean?

Code P2197 is a result of the oxygen A/F sensor incorrectly detecting the air to fuel ratio of the exhaust. This ratio is sent to the ECM which uses this data, along with comparisons to the outside air, to regulate the air to fuel ratio needed by the engine. This DTC code is the result of this air/fuel ratio being read as lean, which indicates that there is too much oxygen in relation to the fuel in your vehicle.

P2197 Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Low Engine Power
  • Engine misfires
  • Vehicle overheating

P2197 Causes

  • Frayed oxygen sensor circuit wiring/connectors
  • Faulty heated oxygen sensor bank 2
  • Malfunctioning fuel injector
  • Vacuum leaks
  • Fuel pressure too high/low
  • A/F sensor relay faulty

Code P2197 Severity – Severe

Initially, this trouble code will not prevent your vehicle from running. The most common result(s) are lowered fuel economy and vehicle overheating. However, if left unsolved, this code could cause internal damage to other components of your vehicle including damage to the catalytic converter or burn valves which could cause your check engine light to illuminate continuously, in which your vehicle should not be operated.

Code P2197 Common Diagnosis Mistakes

Prematurely replacing the oxygen (O2) sensor before attempting to visually inspect the wiring around the other components of the intake system for fraying or disconnection.

P2197 Diagnosis

  • Tools Needed to Diagnose:

Difficulty of Diagnosis and Repair – (1-6)

  1. Check to see if there are any other codes along with P2197 and clear your Check Engine Light with FIXD.
  2. Check the freeze frame data and fuel gauge to pinpoint the issue.
  3. Conduct a visual inspection of wiring around the oxygen sensor(s) for fraying or disconnection.
  4. Visually check mass airflow sensor to see if it needs cleaning/replacement.
  5. Replace vacuum lines or intake air tube if there are signs of cracks or disconnections.
  6. Consider replacing oxygen sensor if the check-engine light persists.
  7. In some cases, the engine code may be due to a faulty Engine Control Module (ECM).
