Mitsubishi owners enjoy one of the longest manufacturer warranties in the industry. The factory warranty offers coverage for replacements and repairs if your vehicle breaks down due to a fault in a part or component. If you’re looking to buy or recently bought a Mitsubishi, you might want to learn more about your warranty options. This article will cover everything you need to learn about your Mitsubishi warranty, including what it covers, extended warranty options, and how they benefit you.

What is the Mitsubishi Warranty?

A Mitsubishi warranty is a type of vehicle warranty designed to cushion you against having to pay for a repair, replacement, or labor cost associated with specific parts of the vehicle if they experience mechanical faults or failure. It’s imperative to understand that the warranty covers faults or failures related to faulty workmanship.

Mitsubishi offers a factory and extended warranty. The factory warranty is the automated warranty that your vehicle comes with when you purchase it for the first time. If you decide to keep the vehicle after the factory warranty expires, you may need to get an extended Mitsubishi warranty to keep the vehicle protected.

What Does the Mitsubishi Factory Warranty Cover?

No matter which model you buy, the Mitsubishi warranty goes into effect the day you purchase or lease the vehicle. Here are the types of protection Mitsubishi offers:

  • Five years or 60,000 miles new vehicle warranty: This is a bumper-to-bumper warranty offering basic protection for systems and parts that come with your Mitsubishi vehicle in case they’re defective due to poor workmanship or an improperly installed part. The coverage protects most of your vehicle’s components and systems.
  • 10 years or 100,000 miles limited powertrain warranty: Covers repairs or replacements of powertrain components or related parts such as the engine, transmission, transfer case, gaskets, and axle housing.
  • Five-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance: Flat tire services, jump starts, lockout assistance, gas delivery, and towing are all part of the 24/7 roadside assistance plan.
  • Five years or 60,000 miles restraint system warranty: The restraint system warranty covers seatbelts and other related components. The coverage is unlimited for Kansas residents.
  • Seven years or 100,000 miles perforation/anti-corrosion warranty: If you live in an area where rust is common, this warranty coverage can help you replace or repair the body sheet metal free of charge.
  • One year or 12,000-mile adjustment period: This warranty covers adjustments required due to manufacturing defects during the first year of vehicle ownership.

Additional Warranties

Besides the key parts, Mitsubishi also provides additional factory coverages. They include:

  • The Emission control systems warranty ranges from two years or 24,000 miles and eight years or 80,000 miles, depending on the component being repaired and your location.
  • There is a 24-month battery warranty. If your vehicle’s battery stops working before the end of the third year of ownership, Mitsubishi can replace it for you at half price. They also cover labor 100%.
  • The air conditioner refrigerant comes with a one-year/12,000-mile coverage, whichever comes first. Once expired, the warranty will only cover the refrigerant if it’s part of a covered repair.

What’s Not Covered in The Factory Warranty?

Like any other warranty, the impressively long Mitsubishi warranty also has exclusions. How you use, store or drive your vehicle can void your warranty. For instance, you need to follow the maintenance plan outline in your owner’s manual. If you fail to do so, the dealership may claim misuse or improper maintenance. Here are standard exclusions in the Mitsubishi warranty:

  • Accidents and collisions
  • Theft or vandalism
  • Vehicle misuses such as racing, overloading, or driving over curbs
  • Alterations or modifications to your vehicle, such as using incorrect wheel size or modifying the engine and body
  • Damage from environments such as freezing, flooding, or hail
  • Improper maintenance or installation of unoriginal Mitsubishi parts

Is the Mitsubishi Warranty Transferable?

The Mitsubishi warranty is transferable, except for the 10 years or 100,000 miles powertrain warranty. If you want to purchase a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle, it’s essential to understand that the powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first. This helps improve the resale value of your vehicle if you plan to sell a car before the manufacturer warranty expires.

Mitsubishi Extended Warranty

The Mitsubishi extended warranty is also called the Mitsubishi Diamond Care Protection Plan. It extends factory warranty coverage by up to two years or 40,000 miles. That means the warranty covers all parts included in the original factory warranty. While this extended warranty is considered comprehensive, it excludes several cosmetic wear and tear items such as:

  • Tires
  • Exterior trim
  • Brake pads
  • Bumpers
  • Wheels
  • Mirrors
  • Upholstery
  • Glass

You can buy the Mitsubishi extended warranty from your dealership or from third–party warranty providers. Mitsubishi does not offer extended warranty plans.

How Much Does the Mitsubishi Extended Warranty Cost?

Different Mitsubishi dealerships provide different prices and coverages depending on plan administrators, which massively affect each plan’s total cost. If you buy your extended warranty from your dealership, it can roll the price into your auto plan, which means you may end up paying interest on it. However, it’s critical to note that pricing at the dealership is negotiable. The cost will also vary due to other factors such as:

  • Your location
  • Your vehicle model
  • Vehicle mileage
  • Vehicle age

Do You Need a Mitsubishi Extended Warranty?

When determining whether you need an extended Mitsubishi warranty, it helps to consider the vehicle’s reliability and cost of repairs. Mitsubishi comes sixth out of 32 car brands, according to data by RepairPal.

The average annual repair costs are around $535, which is below the industry’s average of $652. Some Mitsubishi models such as the Mirage, Eclipse, and Outlander have an excellent average annual repair for common issues. Since repair costs are low and reliability is great, you may be able to afford repairs. However, significant fixes such as transmission replacements can be costly.

The Bottom line: Mitsubishi Warranty

Before making the decision to buy an extended warranty from Mitsubishi, assess your finances and the likelihood of having a major repair. Remember, the older your vehicle gets, the more vulnerable to major repairs it becomes. It’s also critical to conduct thorough research when buying an extended Mitsubishi warranty and choose a plan that fits your needs. Many third-party warranty providers and dealerships offer customized plans to fit your vehicle’s repair and replacement needs.
