You can’t go wrong with a vehicle from the Hyundai lineup if you’re in the market for a dependable commuter car or fun family SUV. Hyundai is known for producing cars and SUVs that are reliable, enjoyable to drive, and loaded with safety features. Plus, Hyundai owners can benefit from the manufacturer’s extended warranty program, which gives drivers several options for protecting their vehicles and enhancing the experience of Hyundai ownership. Here is your guide to the Hyundai Extended Warranty program.

What Is a Hyundai Extended Warranty?

A brand-new Hyundai comes with a New Vehicle Limited Warranty that provides coverage for up to five years or 60,000 miles. The warranty covers repairs for mechanical or electrical failures caused by a manufacturing defect or faulty material. If you want to extend your coverage past the five-year/60,000-mile limit, you can purchase a Hyundai Protection Plan Vehicle Service Contract (VSC), Hyundai’s version of an extended warranty.

The Hyundai Protection Plan is available in three levels of coverage:

  • Powertrain
  • Gold
  • Platinum

If you’re a Hyundai owner with at least 30 days or 1,000 miles left on your original warranty, you are eligible to purchase a Hyundai Protection Plan. In other words, you must buy your preferred plan before reaching 59 months/59,000 miles. After purchasing an extended warranty for your Hyundai, your coverage will expand from five years of ownership to 10 years, and the mileage limit will increase to 100,000 miles.

What Does Each Protection Plan Level Cover?

If you purchase the Powertrain Protection Plan, it covers repairs for the following components:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Drive axle

The Gold Protection Plan covers everything included in the Powertrain Protection Plan while adding coverage for:

  • Climate control
  • Shocks
  • Front suspension
  • Rear suspension
  • Fuel system
  • Electrical system

The Platinum Protection Plan covers everything included in the Powertrain and Gold Plans while adding coverage for:

  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • CV boots
  • Navigation
  • Audio
  • High-tech components

Standard Hyundai Extended Warranty Protections

All three Hyundai Protection Plans offer these standard perks:

  • Up to $200 in trip interruption benefits for five days
  • Rental car reimbursement of $35 a day for 10 days
  • Roadside assistance, such as battery jump-starts, tire changes, and towing.

Your trip interruption benefits apply if a warrantable mechanical issue disables your vehicle when you travel more than 150 miles from home. Your roadside assistance benefits are available for the duration of your coverage.

Does the Hyundai Extended Warranty Have Any Exclusions?

While Hyundai Protection Plans are comprehensive, they don’t cover everything. For example, your Hyundai extended warranty won’t cover:

  • Damage caused by lack of maintenance or vehicle misuse
  • Damage caused by accidents or natural disasters
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Wear items such as filters and brake pads
  • Any item not listed in your plan’s component coverage

Why You Should Consider Purchasing a Hyundai Extended Warranty

Many drivers purchase Hyundai Protection Plans to take advantage of the following benefits:

  • Saving money on unexpected repairs: Even Hyundai cars and SUVs, as reliable as they are, can experience unexpected problems, especially with frequent driving. An extended warranty can help you save money on major repairs.
  • Peace of mind: Having extended coverage is reassuring because you’ll know that Hyundai will take care of common problems like a dead battery, flat tires, and running out of fuel through its roadside assistance coverage.
  • Increased resale value: If you sell your car before your extended coverage expires, the remaining warranty term transfers to the next owner, increasing the vehicle’s resale value.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Purchasing a Hyundai Extended Warranty?

While purchasing a Hyundai Protection Plan offers several benefits, you should also consider the following:

You’re Limited to Specific Repair Shops

Every Hyundai Protection Plan requires you to take your car to a Hyundai dealership when it needs repairs. This requirement could be inconvenient if you’ve moved since you purchased your Hyundai and no longer live near a Hyundai dealership. You also can’t shop around for lower prices.

You May Pay Additional Interest Charges

When you purchase a Hyundai Protection Plan, you can pay the entire cost upfront or roll the cost into your monthly car payments. If you opt for the latter, your financing plan’s interest rates will apply to the cost of the contract. That means you’re paying interest on your vehicle and the service contract, increasing the total amount of interest you’ll pay.

You Have to Purchase the Extended Warranty Within a Specific Timeframe

Remember that you can only purchase a Hyundai Protection Plan if you have at least 1,000 miles left on the original warranty. That doesn’t give you much time if you’re racking up many miles on your Hyundai because you have a long work commute or take frequent road trips.

Alternatives to the Hyundai Protection Plan

Suppose you decide that the Hyundai Protection Plan isn’t a good fit for what you need in a warranty, but you still want to extend your coverage. If that’s the case, consider purchasing an extended warranty from a third-party provider. Third-party protection plans have their advantages, including:

  • Repair shop flexibility: While a Hyundai Protection Plan requires you to take your vehicle to an authorized Hyundai dealership for repairs, a third-party warranty allows you to take your car to any repair shop that’s part of your provider’s network.
  • Longer warranty terms: Even if you purchase the highest Hyundai Protection Plan coverage level, it’s only good for up to 100,000 miles. Many third-party providers offer plans to cover your vehicle for up to 300,000 miles.
  • No limit on purchase date: While you have a limited time to purchase a Hyundai Protection Plan, a third-party provider will sell you coverage even after your original warranty expires.

Remember that when you purchase a warranty from a third party, it won’t guarantee the use of genuine parts when your vehicle needs repairs. Also, your technician might not have the requisite training to work on Hyundai cars or SUVs. With a Hyundai Protection Plan, Hyundai-trained technicians will make your vehicle’s warrantable repairs, and they’ll use genuine Hyundai parts.

It’s easy to see why many drivers purchase Hyundai extended warranties. Hopefully, with the information in this guide, you can choose the best protection plan for your driving needs, and you’ll drive your Hyundai for a long time.
