What Is a Nissan Extended Warranty and Do You Need One?

nissan extended warranty
TABLE OF CONTENTS

If you drive or are looking to purchase a Nissan, it’s important to know your warranty options. When you purchase a new Nissan, it automatically comes with a factory warranty. This includes coverage for up to three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, along with a five-year limited powertrain warranty.

However, if you want to protect your Nissan long after the factory warranty expires, knowing your extended warranty options can help you get the right plan for your needs. Use this guide to help you understand what a Nissan extended warranty is, what options you have, and whether it’s worth the investment.

What Is a Nissan Extended Warranty?

The Security+Plus program grants Nissan drivers the opportunity to extend their factory warranty to gain additional coverage benefits over a longer period of time. Drivers have three tiers of coverage to choose from when purchasing a new vehicle, or one plan if buying a certified pre-owned Nissan. All the extended warranty plans come with the option of either a $0 or $100 deductible. You can choose from different term options through your Nissan dealership, up to eight years or 120,000 miles. Additionally, the coverage you purchase is transferrable if you decide to sell your Nissan to another driver.

What Options Do I Have When Purchasing a Nissan Extended Warranty?

Drivers can choose between three levels of coverage for their new Nissan or one plan if purchasing a certified pre-owned vehicle. Here’s what you need to know about each tier:

Powertrain Preferred Plan

This is the lowest tier of coverage. It covers 839 parts and components of your vehicle, offering replacements and repairs in the event of a mechanical breakdown. The powertrain plan emphasizes the essential parts that make your car go, like its engine, transmission, and drivetrain.

Silver Preferred Plan

The silver preferred plan covers the same parts as the powertrain plan and more. It covers a total of 1,529 parts. In addition to covering your powertrain system, it includes your climate control system, suspension, electrical, steering, brakes, and fuel system.

Gold Preferred Plan

This is the highest level of extended warranty coverage Nissan offers. It covers over 2,213 parts. This is an exclusionary plan, meaning it covers everything that isn’t explicitly excluded in the contract details.

Gold Preferred Wrap Plan

If you purchase a certified pre-owned Nissan, you can get the gold preferred wrap plan to extend your warranty. This plan covers a total of 2,224 components, such as your powertrain system, brakes, suspension, electrical, climate control system, fuel, body interior and components, and your navigation, audio, and video system. Drivers with this level of coverage have a $0 deductible and can choose between a seven-year/100,000 miles or eight-year/120,000 miles warranty plan.

What Does the Nissan Extended Warranty Exclude?

The Nissan extended warranty covers repairs and replacements for parts that break down due to manufacturer defects. It doesn’t offer warranty coverage for:

  • Damage caused by accidents, theft, or vandalism: Warranties don’t cover damages your vehicle incurs because of an accident, vandalism, or theft. You can protect your vehicle from these damage sources through your insurance plan.
  • General wear and tear: Over time, your car is likely to experience normal wear and tear that can decrease its performance. Your warranty won’t cover repairing or replacing parts due to general wear.
  • Standard maintenance: Warranties don’t cover your routine maintenance fees for your vehicle.
  • Mechanical problems caused by neglect or misuse: It’s your responsibility to ensure the routine care and upkeep of your vehicle. Your warranty doesn’t cover mechanical problems caused by vehicle neglect or misuse.

What Other Benefits Does the Nissan Extended Warranty Include?

In addition to your parts coverage, getting a Nissan extended warranty comes with certain perks. For example, all tiers of extended warranty coverage come with 24-hour roadside assistance. Your roadside assistance services include:

  • Battery jumpstart
  • Emergency fuel delivery
  • Tow services to your nearest Nissan service center or another qualified repair shop
  • Lockout assistance
  • Tire services

Upgrading to the silver or gold extended warranty plans comes with additional benefits. These perks include:

  • Trip interruption reimbursement: If your Nissan experiences a mechanical breakdown because of a factory defect, the manufacturer will reimburse you for lodging, food, and alternative transportation expenses if you are more than 100 miles away from home.
  • Car rental reimbursement: While your car is getting serviced, the manufacturer will grant you a $35 reimbursement per day for up to five days for your rental car.
  • Additional towing allowance: You get up to $100 for each towing claim you make.

If you purchase a certified pre-owned Nissan with the gold preferred wrap extended coverage, it comes with the 24-hour roadside assistance service, rental car reimbursement, and trip interruption benefits.

How Much Does a Nissan Extended Warranty Cost?

Many factors account for the cost of a Nissan extended warranty. Since providers calculate premiums individually, it’s best to contact a dealership or other provider to get a quote on your warranty cost. In general, the factors affecting the cost of your coverage include:

  • The type of coverage you choose: The more coverage you get, the more expensive it’s likely to be.
  • The mileage and age of your vehicle: Older vehicles or those with high mileage may cost more to cover since they’re more likely to experience mechanical problems.
  • What kind of deductible you pick: If you choose a package with a low deductible or no deductible at all, you’ll likely have a higher monthly premium.
  • Your car’s model: Some models may be more likely to have mechanical problems than others. These models may be more expensive to cover.

Should I Get a Nissan Extended Warranty?

In general, an extended warranty may not save you money over time, but it can give you peace of mind. Extended warranties can protect you from having to pay out of pocket for major repairs if your car experiences an unexpected breakdown. Since you pay into your warranty over time through your monthly premium, it can save you from paying a large lump fee for repair services if your car experiences a factory-related problem.

If you’re thinking about buying a new or pre-owned Nissan, there are a lot of considerations for choosing the best warranty plan for you. Weigh the pros and cons of each option and consider ways to reduce your costs by comparing both dealership and third-party packages.
