How To Cancel GAP Insurance on Your Cadillac

To cancel your Cadillac GAP insurance, you’ll have to communicate (in writing) your request to cancel to the administrator of your Cadillac GAP policy. AMT Warranty Corp. (877-265-1072) & Safe-Guard Warranty Corporation (833-959-0106) are common providers of GAP insurance for Cadillac dealers.

Besides being a well-regarded manufacturer of luxury automobiles, Cadillac also offers GAP insurance coverage on all its new, used, and leased vehicles.

If you purchased Cadillac GAP insurance back when you bought your car, you might now be wondering how to cancel that GAP coverage.

Whatever your reason for wanting to cancel your Cadillac GAP policy, we’ll help teach you how to cancel it quickly and efficiently. If you’re still on the fence about whether or not you want to cancel your Cadillac GAP insurance, we’ll give you all the info you need to make an informed decision and choose the best path forward.

What do I need to do to cancel my Cadillac GAP insurance?

To cancel your Cadillac GAP insurance, you need to contact the administrator of your Cadillac GAP insurance plan directly. The contact information for your GAP administrator is listed on your GAP agreement.

According to Cadillac’s website, “GAP coverage is provided by the dealer/creditor and administered by AMT Warranty Corp.” While AMT is a preferred provider of General Motors (GM) – the owner of Cadillac – it’s a separate company unrelated to Cadillac and other brands under the GM umbrella.

In addition, our online research also reveals that Cadillac uses Safe-Guard Warranty Corporation as one of its GAP administrators. Cadillac’s sample GAP coverage contract lists Safe-Guard as the administrator of its GAP policies, which is at odds with the FAQ page on Cadillac’s website, where the company lists AMT Warranty as the administrator.

Regardless of what Cadillac’s website says at the time of reading, your one source of truth will be the GAP contract you signed when you purchased your policy.

If for any reason you can’t locate your GAP agreement, contact the dealer where you purchased your Cadillac and ask them what you need to do to cancel your GAP insurance. You can also contact AMT Warranty Corp. directly at 877-265-1072 for more information, or you can write to them at the following address:

AMT Warranty Corp.
P.O. Box 927

Bradford, TX 76095

If Safe-Guard is your plan’s administrator, you can contact them by phone at 833-959-0106, or write to them at:

Safe-Guard Warranty Corporation

Two Concourse Parkway, Suite 500
Atlanta, GA 30328

If all else fails, you can send your cancellation notice letter to the address of your GAP administrator, but don’t assume your coverage is canceled once you send that letter. Instead, make it a point to obtain a letter from the dealer or GAP insurance administrator confirming that your coverage has successfully been canceled.

Will I get a refund on my Cadillac GAP insurance cancellation?

Money Back Concept - Aluminum Keyboard with Orange Key. 3D Illustration.

If you cancel your Cadillac GAP insurance policy within 60 days of purchasing it, you’re entitled to a full refund as long as you haven’t actually used the coverage. If it’s been more than 60 days, you may be entitled to a prorated refund for the time remaining on the policy.

So, if you purchased a five-year GAP insurance plan that cost $250 and you want to cancel after one year, you would receive around a $200 refund. Keep in mind that refunds do not include cancellation or processing fees.

Cadillac typically charges a $50 processing fee to cancel GAP insurance coverage, though in certain states, this fee is not applicable.

Check out the table below for a list of states where Cadillac GAP cancellation/processing fees do not apply.

Colorado
Indiana
Kansas
Louisiana
Maine
Massachusetts

When does it make sense to cancel GAP insurance on my Cadillac?

If you’re thinking about canceling your Cadillac GAP insurance, there’s a good chance one of the following applies to your situation.

1. You sell the car

Canceling GAP insurance is a no-brainer if you sell your car. You don’t own the vehicle anymore, so your Cadillac GAP insurance policy (like your auto insurance policy on that car) is no longer needed.

2. You trade in your vehicle

If you trade your Cadillac in for a new car, your old GAP insurance policy won’t apply, so you can go ahead and cancel it (though you should seriously consider purchasing a new GAP policy on the newly-acquired car).

3. You pay off the loan early

Paying off your loan balance means you eliminate the risk of any gap between your loan amount and the value of the car. Once you pay off your loan, you should cancel your GAP insurance policy and see if you’re eligible for a refund of any unused premiums.

4. The value of your car exceeds your loan balance

It may not be as straightforward as paying off your loan early, but if you pay down your loan faster and the outstanding balance is now less than the value of the car, your GAP coverage probably won’t be needed anyway.

Say your car is worth $30,000 but your loan balance is only $20,000; your GAP coverage won’t take effect if your car is totaled since the payout from your auto insurance will be more than enough to cover the remaining amount on your loan.

5. You bought a cheaper GAP insurance policy with the same coverages

If you find a GAP insurance policy with the exact same coverages at a much lower price, the savings can be reason enough to cancel. If you need to use the coverage, you’ll only be able to file a claim with one of the companies (if you try and file a claim twice on the same vehicle, that’s considered insurance fraud). Should you choose to cancel your Cadillac GAP coverage because you found a cheaper policy, make sure the other policy is in force before you cancel your Cadillac GAP insurance.

FAQs

Some companies have specific cancellation forms you have to complete to cancel coverage. For those that don’t, a cancellation letter should include your name and contact information, the policy number, your request to cancel the policy, the effective date of cancellation, and your signature.

Canceling GAP insurance can be a good idea if you no longer own the car or if its value is significantly higher than the remaining loan balance.

You may be able to cancel GAP insurance online, but the Cadillac contract usually requires you to provide written notice of your request to cancel coverage.

It can take several weeks before your Cadillac GAP insurance is successfully canceled, but if you’re due a refund, you should receive the refund based on the effective cancellation date, even if it’s in the past.

If you pay off your Cadillac loan early, you may be entitled to a partial refund of your GAP insurance premiums. Your GAP contract will have the exact details regarding the refund policy regarding early cancellation of your policy.

Cadillac GAP insurance coverage is available for terms of up to 8 years.

GAP insurance is usually relatively inexpensive and, like all insurance, is designed to protect against unexpected financial losses. If you owe more money on your car than its current market value, GAP insurance is probably worth the money.

Our research shows that many Cadillac dealerships limit your GAP insurance payment waiver to a maximum of $75,000. Check your GAP agreement or contact your dealership to see if there’s a limit on your policy.
