The oil pump is an engine component responsible for delivering oil from the oil pan up to other internal engine components. If you regularly maintain your vehicle, the oil pump can last for the life of the engine. In some cases, though, it can fail prematurely, in which case it needs to be replaced. Depending on how much work needs to be done, an oil pump replacement can take between four and eight hours.

To make sure you replace your oil pump at the right time, check your manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedule, or get FIXD. The FIXD Sensor and free app tracks your car’s maintenance schedule for you and alerts you when it’s time for service so you can keep your car running smoothly without the headaches!

Cost to DIY: $50-$397

If you have general knowledge about car repair, you can save money by DIYing your oil pump replacement. This job involves some basic tools and equipment, and you’ll need to jack up the car and remove the wheels in order to access the pump. You’ll also want to make sure you have something to drain the old oil into and think about where you can take the old oil for safe disposal. It’s important to note that the cost of the oil pump, gaskets, and the oil pan can vary depending on the vehicle.

Keep in mind: There are many different types of oil pumps, filters, and even engine oil. Not all oil pumps fit all vehicles. If you plan to replace the oil pump yourself, be sure to choose the right parts to fit your vehicle. When in doubt, always refer to your owner’s manual.

What Is The Oil Pump?

The oil pump usually sits in the oil pan or towards the front of your engine. From there, the pump brings oil up from the pan and forces it in and around the engine’s components. The oil will circulate through the engine and then go back into the pan. The pump keeps the oil circulating so your engine parts stay lubricated.

What Does an Oil Pump Replacement Include?

To replace the oil pump, the vehicle needs to go up on jacks to access the oil pan for removal. The wheels need to come off, and you’ll need to disconnect the negative battery cable. The oil pan and any other items in the way of the oil pump need to come off, and then the oil pump can be removed. Once the old pump is off, the new pump can go in; the oil pan can go back on, and then the wheels can go back on. The oil pan gasket will need to be replaced, and since you will be adding new oil back into the engine, it’s also a good idea to replace the oil filter since one of the leading causes of oil pump failure is debris in the oil. Make sure to clean any debris (such as oil shavings) from the oil pan before it’s reinstalled.

Depending on how many parts need to come off in order to access the oil pan and pump, this job can take anywhere between four and eight hours.

What Happens If You Don’t Replace the Oil Pump?

If you don’t replace a bad oil pump, it will stop pumping oil into the engine, and it won’t take long to damage the engine. It is not a good idea to drive your car at all if the oil pump is failing. If you end up damaging the engine, you’ll have an even more expensive repair or need a new car. If you’re having problems with the oil pump, you might see engine oil pressure sensor codes come up during a scan.

How Often Do You Need to Replace the Oil Pump?

There is no scheduled interval for replacing the oil pump, and in most cases, if you replace the oil at regular intervals and make sure you always have plenty of engine oil, the pump will last the life of the vehicle. You can wait to notice symptoms of a failing pump before replacing it.

Make sure you check your owner’s manual for the oil change schedule. The oil should last at least 3,000 miles after it’s replaced, although in some cases, it can last longer. Depending on where you drive and how hard you push your vehicle, you might need to change it more often.

Common Symptoms You Need to Replace Your Oil Pump

  • Low oil pressure: keep an eye on your gauges and the oil pressure warning light
  • Increased engine temperature
  • Engine noises: you might hear metal rubbing on metal if there is not enough lubrication in the engine.
  • Engine won’t start: some newer vehicles have a low oil pressure switch that’s directly tied to the ignition. If your oil pump isn’t working, it won’t allow the car to start.
