2012 Toyota Corolla Factory Warranty

Protection of car. Business concept. Two hands and a blue car

The 2012 Toyota Corolla is now past its original in-service date of  2023, so several of the factory warranties have expired or will soon expire based on age and mileage limits.

  • The 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty has expired based on time.
  • The 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty has expired based on time.
  • The 5-year unlimited-mile corrosion perforation warranty has expired based on time.
  • The 2-year/24,000-mile federal emissions warranty has expired based on time.
  • The 3-year/50,000-mile California emissions warranty has expired based on time.

If you are confused about what each of the factory warranties covers for your Toyota Corolla, I recommend checking out our article “The Ultimate Guide to Car Warranties.” This guide explains in detail what is included in the basic warranty, powertrain warranty, corrosion perforation warranty, air conditioning warranty, paint warranty, battery warranty, tire warranty, federal emissions warranty, and California emissions warranty. All of these warranties fall under the factory warranty provided by Toyota on new vehicle purchases.

The guide breaks down what types of repairs and parts are covered under each warranty, as well as duration and mileage limits. Understanding the ins and outs of factory warranties can help you get the most out of your warranty coverage and know what to expect if repairs are needed outside of the warranty period. Check out the full guide for more clarity on factory car warranties.

Basic Warranty

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty, also known as the basic warranty, on the 2012 Toyota Corolla does not cover damage or failures resulting from fire, accidents, theft, abuse, negligence, improper repairs, alterations, lack of maintenance, or installation of non-Toyota parts. Also not covered are normal wear and tear, noises, maintenance services like oil changes, and damage from environmental conditions.

Based on the in-service date of 2012 and current mileage of 132,000 miles, this basic warranty coverage expired in 2015.

Powertrain Warranty

The powertrain warranty covers repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship on the engine, transmission/transaxle, front-wheel-drive system, and rear-wheel-drive system. This includes the cylinder block, head and all internal engine parts, timing gears, timing chain/belt, flywheel, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, engine mounts, turbocharger housing, supercharger housing, engine control computer, water pump, fuel pump, seals and gaskets. The transmission/transaxle case and all internal parts, torque converter, clutch cover, transmission mounts, transfer case, and all internal parts are also covered.

The powertrain warranty coverage is for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Based on the in-service date of 2012 and current mileage of 132,000 miles, this powertrain warranty expired in 2017.

Corrosion Perforation Warranty

The rust perforation limited warranty covers the repair or replacement of any original body panel that develops perforation from corrosion. This warranty lasts 60 months from the vehicle’s in-service date, regardless of mileage. Since the in-service date for this 2012 Toyota Corolla was in 2012, the 60-month/unlimited mileage rust perforation limited warranty expired in 2017.

Air Conditioning Warranty

Please note that the air conditioning warranty is not explicitly stated in the warranty guide. We are assuming it’s covered under the Basic Warranty. Please confirm with your Toyota Dealer on exact details.

The Air Conditioning Warranty covers repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of the air conditioning system components, including the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and associated parts. For this 2012 Toyota Corolla, the coverage was 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever came first, under the Basic Warranty. Since the vehicle’s in-service date was in 2012, the 3-year/36,000-mile air conditioning warranty would have expired in 2015.

Battery Warranty

Please note that the battery warranty is not explicitly stated in the warranty guide. We are assuming it’s covered under the Basic Warranty. Please confirm with your Toyota Dealer the exact details.

The battery in the 2012 Toyota Corolla was covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever came first. This warranty covers repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of the battery. However, it does not cover repairs for damage resulting from misuse, modifications, improper maintenance, accidents, or excessive deterioration of the environment. Since this vehicle’s in-service date was in 2012, the 3-year/36,000-mile battery warranty coverage under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty expired in 2015.

Tire Warranty

The original tires on the 2012 Toyota Corolla were covered by their own manufacturer’s warranty, not Toyota’s warranty. The tire warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship but does not cover damage from improper maintenance, misuse, road hazards, or normal wear. Tire warranty coverage periods vary by manufacturer but typically range from 3 years/36,000 miles to 6 years/60,000 miles.

So for this 2012 Corolla, the original tire warranty likely expired sometime between 2015 and 2018, depending on the tire manufacturer’s coverage period. The owner would need to check the tire manufacturer’s warranty terms to know the exact expiration.

Federal Emissions Warranty

The Federal Emissions Warranty covers repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship that would cause the vehicle to fail an EPA-approved emissions test. Coverage is for 2 years or 24,000 miles from the vehicle’s in-service date, whichever comes first. For this 2012 Toyota Corolla, the in-service date was in 2012, so the 2-year/24,000-mile Federal Emissions Warranty expired in 2014. The warranty does not cover failures caused by improper maintenance, misuse, modifications, or accidents. Since some emissions-related parts have extended 8-year/80,000-mile coverage, those specific parts would be covered until 2020 for this vehicle.

The Clean Air Act

The Clean Air Act requires manufacturers to warranty emissions control components for at least 2 years or 24,000 miles. For this 2012 Toyota Corolla, the 2-year/24,000-mile emissions warranty expired in 2014. However, under the Clean Air Act, Toyota may be required to replace certain emissions-related parts that fail during the vehicle’s “useful life”, defined by the EPA as 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. So for this 2012 Corolla, Toyota may be required to replace defective emissions-related parts under the Clean Air Act until 2022, even though the minimum 2-year/24,000-mile warranty has expired. This is contingent on the vehicle owner reporting the failure and requesting repair within a reasonable period of time.

California Emissions Warranty

The California Emissions Warranty covers repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship that would cause the vehicle to fail a California smog check test. Coverage is for 3 years or 50,000 miles from the vehicle’s in-service date, whichever comes first.

For this 2012 Toyota Corolla, the in-service date was in 2012, so the 3-year/50,000-mile California Emissions Warranty expired in 2015. The warranty does not cover failures caused by lack of maintenance, misuse, modifications, or accidents. Certain emissions-related parts have extended 7-year/70,000-mile coverage under this warranty, so those parts would be covered until 2019 for this vehicle.

2012 Toyota Corolla Recalls

The 2012 Toyota Corolla has been involved in several NHTSA recalls related to airbags. In 2020, NHTSA campaign number 20V024000 recalled certain 2011-2019 Corollas due to an issue where the airbag electronic control unit may malfunction and disable airbag deployment in a crash. In 2019, campaign 19V005000 recalled certain 2010-2013 Corollas for potentially explosive passenger frontal air bag inflators that could rupture and spray sharp metal fragments at occupants.

Additionally, the 2012 Corolla was involved in the large 2017 recall 17V006000 for dangerous Takata airbag inflators that could explode in a crash. This NHTSA recall for the 2012 Toyota Corolla shows multiple issues with airbags that could greatly increase injury risk for occupants if the deployment fails in a crash.

Extended Warranties

Extended Warranty Available Upon Car Purchase

When purchasing a new 2012 Toyota Corolla, owners had the option to purchase an extended warranty called Toyota Extra Care. This extended warranty provided additional coverage beyond the factory 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Toyota Extra Care plans ranged from 1 additional year/15,000 miles up to 6 years/125,000 miles of extended coverage.

To find out if an extended warranty is still active on a used 2012 Corolla, contact any Toyota dealer and provide the VIN. They can check the Toyota warranty database to see if the original owner purchased extended coverage. Purchasing Toyota Extra Care extended warranty in 2012 was a good way to get peace of mind and avoid expensive repair bills outside the Corolla’s factory warranty period.

FAQs

  • Damage or failures from fire, accidents, theft, abuse, negligence, improper repairs, alterations, lack of maintenance, or non-Toyota parts – not covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • Tires – covered by separate tire manufacturer warranty, not Toyota
  • Normal wear and tear, noise, vibration, and cosmetic conditions – not covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • Maintenance services like tune-ups, fluid changes, and lubrication – not covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • Vehicles with altered odometers – not covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • Salvage or total-loss vehicles – not covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty
  • Incidental or consequential damages – not covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty

The factory warranty on a new 2012 Toyota Corolla included both parts and labor. The basic coverage was 3 years/36,000 miles and the powertrain coverage was 5 years/60,000 miles, whichever limit came first based on time or mileage. This means Toyota would pay for parts and labor for covered repairs within those time and mileage limits. However, by 2023 an original 2012 Corolla would be well past the time and mileage limits for any factory warranty.

After purchasing a new Toyota, owners have the option to add extended warranty coverage through Toyota Extra Care plans. These plans can extend coverage for 1 to 6 years beyond the original factory warranty, depending on the plan purchased. To add extended coverage after the initial purchase, the vehicle must still be within the time and mileage limits of the factory warranty. In the case of a 2012 Corolla in 2023, it would no longer be eligible for an additional Toyota Extra Care extended warranty since the original factory warranty terms have expired.

The factory warranty on a new 2012 Toyota Corolla included coverage for components like the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and muffler. These exhaust components were covered under the 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, whichever limit came first based on time or mileage.

However, for an original 2012 Corolla in the year 2023, the powertrain warranty’s time and mileage limits would be expired. Toyota factory warranty coverage for replacement exhaust components on a 2012 model would have ended in 2017 at the latest, after 5 years from the in-service date. By 2023, a 2012 Corolla would be well past the mileage and time limits for exhaust component coverage under the original Toyota new vehicle warranty.

After initially purchasing a new Toyota, owners have the option to purchase an extended warranty called Toyota Extra Care if the vehicle is still within the time and mileage limits of the original factory warranty. For example, a 2012 Corolla owner could have added a Toyota Extra Care extended warranty anytime within the first 3 years/36,000 miles while the basic coverage was still active.

However, for an original 2012 Corolla in 2023, the opportunity to purchase extended coverage has passed since both the time and mileage limits of the original factory warranty have expired. Toyota does not allow adding on Extra Care extended warranties after the factory warranty has ended in terms of time or mileage, whichever comes first. So it would not be possible to purchase extended coverage for a 2012 Corolla in the year 2023.
