Understanding the ins and outs of factory warranties can give you peace of mind about repairs and maintenance for your new Camry. Our article simplifies all the fine print so you know exactly what’s covered should any issues arise. Check it out if you need a handy reference for deciphering Toyota’s factory warranty.

Basic Warranty

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty is the same as the basic warranty, and it expired in 2021 for this 2018 Toyota Camry. The basic warranty covers the Camry for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The basic warranty does not cover damage or failures resulting from accidents, abuse, or negligence, modifications like adding non-Toyota accessories, improper maintenance, or environmental conditions like water contamination. Normal wear and tear like brake pad replacement is also not covered. Make sure to consult your owner’s manual to fully understand what is and isn’t covered under the basic/New Vehicle Limited Warranty for your Camry.

Powertrain Warranty

The powertrain warranty for the 2018 Toyota Camry covers repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of the engine, transmission/transaxle, front-wheel drive system, rear-wheel drive system, and restraint system. This warranty might be valid depending on your in-service date or mileage. The powertrain warranty covers the Camry for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Since this 2018 Camry is past the 5-year limit for vehicles with an in-service date prior to the publishing date of this article, repairs are no longer covered under the powertrain warranty.

Corrosion Perforation Warranty

The rust perforation limited warranty for the 2018 Toyota Camry covers the repair or replacement of any original body panel that develops perforation from corrosion (rust-through). This warranty expires in 2023, after 5 years from the in-service date. The rust perforation limited warranty covers the Camry for 5 years with no mileage limit. Since this 2018 Camry is past the 5-year limit for vehicles with an in-service date prior to the publishing date of this article, body panel repairs due to corrosion are no longer covered under the rust perforation limited warranty.

Air Conditioning Warranty

Based on the 2018 Camry maintenance guide, the air conditioning warranty covers repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of any air conditioning system component supplied by Toyota. The warranty coverage is for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.

Since the current year is 2023, the 36-month/36,000-mile air conditioning warranty for a 2018 Camry purchased new would have expired already, as it would have ended in 2021 or at 36,000 miles, whichever occurred first.

Battery Warranty

The 2018 Camry’s new vehicle limited warranty covers the battery for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date. This means the battery is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship. However, the warranty does not cover damage or failures resulting from accidents, abuse, improper adjustments, modifications, alteration, tampering, disconnection, improper towing, improper jumping, or battery fluid spillage.

As the current year is 2023, the 36-month/36,000-mile battery warranty coverage under the new vehicle limited warranty for a 2018 Camry purchased new would have already expired, since it would have ended in 2021 or at 36,000 miles, whichever occurred first.

Tire Warranty

The tires on the 2018 Camry are covered by a separate warranty from the tire manufacturer, not Toyota. The tire warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for a period set by the tire manufacturer, which varies by brand. The warranty does not cover damage or failures from improper maintenance, use of non-recommended tires, road hazards, accidents, or collisions.

Since tires are normally warranted for 3-5 years by tire manufacturers, the original tire warranty for a 2018 Camry purchased new likely expired sometime between 2021-2023, depending on the brand and coverage period provided. As the current year is 2023, the original tire warranty has likely expired based on typical tire warranty periods.

Federal Emissions Warranty

The 2018 Camry’s Federal Emission Control Warranty covers the vehicle for 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the in-service date. There is also coverage for 8 years or 80,000 miles for specific components. It warrants that the vehicle was designed, built, and equipped to conform to federal emissions standards. It covers the repair or replacement of emissions-related parts that are defective in materials or workmanship.

However, it does not cover failures caused by abuse, lack of maintenance, improper repairs, modifications or alterations, or using non-equivalent replacement parts. As the current year is 2023, the 2-year/24,000-mile federal emission warranty for a 2018 Camry purchased new would have already expired, since it would have ended in 2020 or at 24,000 miles, whichever occurred first. However, the 8-year/80,000-mile specific components warranty is still valid if it’s still under the mileage limit.

The Clean Air Act

The Clean Air Act requires automobile manufacturers to warranty the emission control systems on vehicles for at least 2 years or 24,000 miles. For the 2018 Camry covered in the warranty document, this means that Toyota would be required under the Clean Air Act to repair or replace defective emissions-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles from the in-service date.

So for a 2018 Camry purchased new, the emissions system warranty coverage required by the Clean Air Act would have already expired, since it would have ended in 2020 or at 24,000 miles based on the 2-year/24,000-mile requirement. As the current year is 2023, the Clean Air Act emissions warranty for this 2018 Camry would no longer be in effect.

California Emissions Warranty

The 2018 Camry’s California Emission Control Warranty covers the vehicle’s emissions control systems for 3 years/50,000 miles and specified major emissions-related components for 7 years/70,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the in-service date. It warrants that the vehicle meets California’s stringent anti-smog standards. The California emissions warranty covers the repair or replacement of defective emissions-related parts and makes necessary adjustments to ensure the vehicle passes a California smog check test.

However, it does not cover failures caused by abuse, lack of maintenance, improper repairs, modifications or using non-equivalent replacement parts. As the current year is 2023, the 3-year/50,000-mile coverage under the California emissions warranty for a 2018 Camry purchased new would have already expired. The 7 year/70,000 mile would still be valid as long as it is under the mileage limit.

2018 Toyota Camry Recalls

According to the NHTSA recalls for the 2018 Toyota Camry, there were several issues that prompted recalls. These included brake assist vacuum pump failures that could cause sudden loss of braking, defective fuel pumps that could cause engine stalling, incorrect load carrying capacity labels that could lead to overloading, incorrectly sized pistons that could cause the engine to stall, and improperly connected fuel lines that could leak fuel and increase fire risk.

The NHTSA recalls affected various components like the service brakes, fuel system, engine, and equipment. The recalls involved repairs like replacing parts, correcting installations, and replacing labels to fix the issues and bring the vehicles into compliance with standards. The recalls show the 2018 Camry had some potential safety issues that Toyota had to address through official NHTSA recalls.

Extended Warranties

Extended Warranty Available Upon Car Purchase

Toyota offered the option to purchase extended warranty coverage beyond the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty that came standard with the 2018 Camry. Toyota’s extended warranty plans, called Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreements, provided additional coverage for the vehicle’s major systems like the engine and transmission. Extended plans up to 7 years/100,000 miles were available for purchase when the Camry was new.

To find out if an individual 2018 Camry still has active extended coverage, the best way is to contact a Toyota dealer and provide the vehicle’s VIN, mileage, and maintenance records, which they can use to look up the warranty status in Toyota’s system.

FAQs

Here are some things not covered by Toyota’s warranty on the 2018 Camry:

  • Damage or failures from fire, accidents, theft, abuse, negligence, misuse, improper repairs, alterations, or lack of maintenance are not covered. This applies during the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty period.
  • Normal wear and tear, minor noises/vibrations, and appearance items due to regular use and aging are not covered. This applies during the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty period.
  • Parts scheduled for replacement as required maintenance, like brake pads, wiper blades, and spark plugs, are only covered up to their first replacement interval. This applies during the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty period.
  • Incidental or consequential damages like inconvenience, loss of vehicle use, or loss of revenue are also not covered under warranty. This applies to all warranty periods.

Here are the details on Toyota warranty coverage for parts and labor:

  • For the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, both parts and labor are covered for repairs needed to fix defects in materials or workmanship.
  • The 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty also covers both parts and labor for repairs to the engine, transmission/transaxle, front-wheel drive system, and rear-wheel drive system.
  • The 5-year/unlimited mileage corrosion perforation warranty covers repair or replacement of any original body panel that develops rust-through perforation. Labor is included.
  • Toyota does offer Vehicle Service Agreements that extend warranty coverage beyond the original warranty periods after initial purchase. These can be purchased at a Toyota dealer up until the vehicle reaches 12 months or 12,500 miles. The extended plans can cover the vehicle up to 7 years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date.

Here are the details on whether Toyota covers replacement exhaust components under warranty for a 2018 Camry in 2023:

The 2018 Camry’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty covers repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of any part supplied by Toyota, which includes exhaust components like the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and exhaust pipes. This basic warranty coverage has expired.

The 2018 Camry’s 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty covers repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of components like the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. This powertrain warranty coverage has also expired based on the 2023 model year.

So Toyota’s original new vehicle warranties for a 2018 Camry no longer cover replacement exhaust parts in 2023, as both the 3-year/36,000-mile and 5-year/60,000-mile warranty periods have passed based on the original in-service date.

Toyota does offer the option to purchase extended warranty coverage, called Vehicle Service Agreements, after the initial purchase of a vehicle. These plans can be purchased at any participating Toyota dealer until the vehicle reaches 12 months or 12,500 miles from the original in-service date. The extended plans can provide coverage for Toyota vehicles up to 7 years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. So for a 2018 Toyota purchased new, there was the option to add extended coverage anytime during the first year of ownership or before the vehicle reached 12,500 miles. The extended plans could provide coverage up until 2025 or 100,000 miles based on the original in-service date.
