What Your 2020 Honda Pilot Warranty Covers
The 2020 Honda Pilot comes with a Factory Warranty that covers a wide variety of vehicle aspects, letting you enjoy the repairs you need without breaking the bank. Of course, the details of this warranty can be complex, as coverage limits vary for different parts and services. The terminology for warranties can also be confusing, with factory, basic, bumper-to-bumper, and more seemingly used interchangeably.
A vehicle’s Factory Warranty — also known as the Manufacturer’s Warranty — is the one that comes with the vehicle when purchased new, and it covers nearly everything that could go wrong due to a manufacturer defect. Additionally, it’s important to understand how warranties are measured. For the most part, you’ll find two limits for each warranty, with one expressed in years and the other expressed in mileage. Whichever threshold you reach first is when your warranty expires.
To learn more about the 2020 Pilot’s warranty coverages, we’ve put together this handy table that lets you review the most important figures at a glance.

Factory Warranty
2020 Honda Pilot Basic Warranty
The Basic Warranty, also called the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, for the 2020 Pilot covers nearly everything in the vehicle for three years or 36,000 miles. You’ll see that some parts covered under this warranty, such as the engine, are covered with additional warranties, while other parts, including the tires, are warrantied separately.
2020 Honda Pilot Powertrain Warranty
The 2020 Pilot’s Powertrain Limited Warranty is good for five years or 60,000 miles, and it covers the engine, transmission, transaxle, and drivetrain system. This warranty necessitates that you maintain proper operation of your Pilot.
Corrosion Perforation Warranty
If any of your Pilot’s body panels begin to rust from the inside out, you’re covered for five years with no mileage limitation under the Rust Perforation Limited Warranty. Any replacement body panel you get does not reset the warranty coverage. New replacement panels will only be covered under the remainder of the original five-year warranty period.
Air Conditioning Warranty
The air conditioning system in your 2020 Pilot is covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty, which lasts three years and either 36,000 or 50,000 miles. Additionally, the air conditioning refrigerant is covered for the first two years or 24,000 miles under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This coverage may have expired.
Paint Warranty
While Honda does not offer a paint warranty, paint defects are covered as part of the Basic Warranty. This does not include damage to paint from accidents. Additionally, paint matching is not covered, even if the mismatched paint is due to a warrantied repair.
Battery Warranty
The 2020 Honda Pilot’s original 12-volt battery is covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership.
Tire Warranty
The tires on your 2020 Pilot are warrantied separately from the rest of the vehicle by the tire manufacturer. Get in touch with your local Honda dealer if you’re having trouble contacting your tire manufacturer directly.
Emissions Warranty
Honda’s Federal Emissions Warranty protects your 2020 Pilot for three years or 36,000 miles, while the California Emissions Warranty (states listed below) is good for three years or 50,000 miles. Depending on when your 2020 Pilot was first purchased or leased, this coverage may be expired as of 2022.
The Clean Air Act requires Honda to warranty the engine computer, catalytic converter, and onboard diagnostics for eight years or 80,000 miles. You may also have additional protection if you live in a state that adopted California’s stringent emission regulations.
In addition to these coverages, the California Emissions Warranty also provides seven years or 70,000 miles of warranty coverage if your vehicle fails an EPA-approved smog test. During this period, the automaker will diagnose, adjust, repair, or replace necessary components to bring your Pilot into compliance. Take your vehicle and a copy of the failed emissions report to an authorized Honda dealer for service. These states include:
- California
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- New Jersey
- New York
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
- Washington

2020 Honda Pilot Warranty Extensions Available Upon Car Purchase
When the 2020 Pilot was first purchased, the most common extended warranty available at the time pushed the Basic Warranty limits to eight years or 120,000 miles. However, the details vary based on the dealership. Keep that in mind if you’re not the vehicle’s first owner and are inheriting an extended warranty.

FAQs
The following are some of the most commonly asked questions about the 2020 Honda Pilot warranty:
How Long Does the Seat Belt Warranty Last?
The seat belt warranty lasts 15 years or 150,000 miles, but it only covers problems regarding its primary function. Repairs for the sake of cosmetics or comfort are not covered by warranty. Further, any issues resulting from misuse or accidental damage are not covered by warranty .
Does My 2020 Honda Pilot Come With a Replacement Battery Warranty?
The 2020 Pilot comes with a Replacement 12-Volt Battery Limited Warranty, which lasts 100 months but works on a tiered system. The full cost of battery replacement is covered only for the first three years before dropping to 60%. Every 10 months, it drops by another 10% until months 96 through 100, where only 5% of battery replacement costs are covered.
What Is Proper Operation?
Proper operation is a term that means your Pilot is kept within speed limits, driven regularly, and receives regular maintenance as needed. Most warranty coverage is dependent upon maintaining proper operation.
Can I File a Claim Even Without Proper Operation?
It is possible to file a warranty claim without following the proper operation standard, but it’s challenging. You must prove the issue with your Pilot is due to a defect rather than your lack of proper operation. You’re covered if it’s due to a defect, but you’re not covered if it’s due to improper operation.
The 2020 Honda Pilot warranty is still going strong, but the end of factory coverage is rapidly approaching. To save on car expenses in the future, you might opt for an extended warranty now that lets you enjoy added protection and drive with peace of mind for longer.
