Factory Warranty
2016 Honda Civic Basic Warranty
This car came with a new vehicle limited warranty good for the first three years of ownership or the first 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. As of 2022, this has expired. Under this warranty, Honda would repair or replace any part, free of charge, that was defective due to faulty materials or manufacturing flaws.
Keep in mind that the new vehicle limited warranty did not cover:
- Parts that break down due to normal wear and tear
- Car washes or other cleaning services
- Cracks, chips, or scratches in the window glass
- Cosmetic flaws that aren’t a result of defective materials
- Filters, brake pads, and other parts used for routine maintenance
The new vehicle limited warranty did cover:
- Original equipment batteries for key fobs and remotes for the first six months of ownership
- Original equipment wiper blade inserts for the first six months of ownership
- Wheel balancing and alignment for the first year of ownership or first 12,000 miles
- Air conditioner refrigerant for the first two years of ownership or first 24,000 miles
Honda may extend coverage for these parts if they’re required for other warranty repairs.
2016 Honda Civic Powertrain Warranty
The Civic came with a powertrain limited warranty that started on the same day as the new vehicle limited warranty. The powertrain limited warranty was valid for the first five years of ownership or the first 60,000 miles. As of 2022, this has expired.
Honda would repair or replace the following components under the powertrain limited warranty if faulty material or manufacturing caused damage:
- Engine (including the cylinder block, all internal parts, and gaskets)
- Transmission and transaxle (including the case, all internal parts, and torque converter)
- Front-wheel-drive system (including the final drive housing, all internal parts, and driveshafts)
Some powertrain parts may have had additional coverage under other warranties.
Corrosion Perforation Warranty
Original owners could take advantage of a rust perforation limited warranty. This warranty began on the same day as the new vehicle limited warranty and was good for five years with no limit on mileage. As of 2022, this has expired.
Under the rust perforation limited warranty, Honda would repair or replace original body panels that rusted completely from the inside out. The rust perforation limited warranty didn’t cover:
- Surface rust on the underbody
- Body panels that have already been repaired or replaced
- Body panel rust due to improper maintenance
- Rust due to debris damaging the paint
- Rust due to exposure to water, mud, or corrosive chemicals
- Paint matching
If defective material or faulty manufacturing caused rust that doesn’t perforate, the damage was covered by the new vehicle limited warranty.
Air Conditioning Warranty
There was no separate air conditioning warranty, but the system was covered by the new vehicle limited warranty. As of 2022, this has expired. The air conditioning and heating systems may be covered by Honda Care.
Paint Warranty
There was no separate paint warranty. The basic warranty, which has now expired, only covered paint defects in material and workmanship from the factory. It did not cover damage from shipping, striking objects, immersion, or surface rust under the paint,
Battery Warranty
The Civic came with a replacement battery limited warranty that’s good for eight years and four months and unlimited miles. The warranty only applies to batteries purchased from a Honda dealership and offers free replacement batteries for the first three years of services.
For the remainder of the warranty, Honda will issue a pro-rated credit toward the purchase of the replacement battery, while the vehicle owner is responsible for installation charges. This part of the battery warranty is still in effect as of 2022.
Emissions Warranty
Honda would make all of the necessary repairs at no cost if your Civic failed an emissions test within the first three years or 36,000 miles. This has now expired. Additionally, the Clean Air Act requires manufacturers to cover repairs to the catalytic converter, engine computer, and on-board computer for the first eight years or 80,000 miles. If your car has less than 80,000 miles, this is still in effect.
The federal emissions warranty covers the following components:
- Catalytic converter(s)
- Engine computer
- On-board diagnostics system
- Crankcase control system
- Evaporative and refueling emissions control systems
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system
- Exhaust system
- Ignition system
- Fuel injection system
- OBD system
- Transmission control system
- Intake air system
- Valve control system

2016 Honda Civic Warranty Extensions Available Upon Car Purchase
Honda Care vehicle service contracts (VSCs) were available for the 2016 Honda Civic with terms of up to eight years or 120,000 miles. Honda VSCs came in four levels of coverage:
- New vehicle coverage
- Pre-owned vehicle coverage
- Certified additional coverage
- Powertrain coverage (pre-owned vehicles only)
New, pre-owned, and certified additional coverage extends warranty coverage for the following:
- Drivetrain: Transmission, differential, front axles, rear axles
- Electronics: Computers, electronic components, electrical system
- Chassis: Suspension, steering, brake system
- Heating/cooling: Air conditioning, heating, and cooling systems
- Honda genuine accessories: Audio and communication devices and accessories, navigational and security systems
If you purchased a pre-owned 2016 Honda Civic and only wanted powertrain coverage instead of the pre-owned VSC, you would have coverage for the following parts:
- Engine
- Front and rear drive axles
- Transmission
- Seals, gaskets, and fluids
Every VSC guarantees that factory-trained technicians will perform repairs with Honda genuine parts. If you’re not within towing distance of a Honda dealership, repairs may be made at a Honda Care-authorized service center.
2016 Honda Civic Extended Warranties Available Now
You could still purchase a Honda Care VSC at a date after your original vehicle purchase, as long as the original warranty was still valid. As of 2022, this warranty has expired, so Honda Care is no longer available. Third-party warranties may be, however.

FAQs
Here are some common questions and answers about the 2016 Honda Civic warranty:
How Can I Find Out if My Civic Is Still Under Warranty?
As of 2022, every factory warranty that came with your 2016 Civic has already expired, except for the replacement battery warranty and possibly your Honda Care VSC if you bought one lasting eight years. Contact your local Honda dealership with your car’s VIN and current mileage to find out for sure whether you have this coverage.
How Can I Get Warranty Services?
The easiest way to get warranty services is to take it to a local Honda dealer. Keep in mind that unless you have a Honda Care VSC, or your problem is a battery covered by the Replacement Battery Warranty, your 2016 Civic is no longer covered under warranty.
Is My Warranty Valid if I'm Outside the United States?
If your factory warranty has expired and you’re looking to reduce out-of-pocket expenses, be sure to check out the CARCHEX+FIXD Vehicle Protection Plan. And remember, the best way to ensure warranty coverage (and prevent costly repairs in the first place) is to follow your manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedule.
