The chart, based on FIXD sensor data , shows that the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150 are the worst offenders when it comes to DTC P0016 occurrences. This is unsurprising as these pickups are among the most popular vehicles on the road (the GMC Sierra and RAM 1500 also have a presence on this list, but not to the extent of the Silverado and F-150).

The Nissan Altima is another guilty party, rounding out the top three high-level occurrences of a P0016 code.

Other mainstream vehicles—the Chevy Equinox and Malibu and the Toyota Camry—also have a history of P0016 codes, but not at the level of the Silverado, F-150, and Altima. This code also has a notable presence in the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. These crossovers are corporate cousins, so seeing them both make this top 10 list isn’t unusual.

However, there are some outliers. While the Honda Pilot and Audi A4 have higher occurrences of P0016, neither brand makes the top 10 list of affected automakers. This doesn’t mean that a Honda Accord or Audi Q5 is invulnerable to code P0016, but rather, the other models from these companies don’t show a pattern of trouble in this area.

Speaking of brands, you’ll see that Chevrolet and Ford lead the pack for the most models with a history of code P0016 troubles. This placement can be attributed to both companies being full-line automakers with an extensive lineup, including pickups. In other words, the more models a company sells, the greater the likelihood of problems arising. Nissan and Toyota also have a deep product bench, explaining the near-the-top presence of these Japanese brands.

The remaining brands on the list—GMC, Cadillac, Dodge, Subaru, Volkswagen, and Buick—don’t have an extensive model roster, but most of their offerings have an elevated record of P0116 troubles.

Keep in mind that these charts reflect an average of all analyzed years (2000-2023). Below is a high-moderate-low breakdown of individual model years.

What is Code P0016?

man holding a car scanner

Determining your car has the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0016—Camshaft Position A: Camshaft Position Correlation—requires immediate attention. In simple terms, this code indicates that the camshaft and crankshaft are no longer operating in sync. This operation is essential to avoid engine damage and ensure it runs as efficiently as possible.

Check out the in-depth article,P0016 Engine Code | Camshaft and Crankshaft Not In Sync., for complete details on this DTC. You’ll learn if it’s safe to drive with the issues (quick answer: no), the common causes of this problem, how to diagnose this issue, and how to fix code P0016.

Here’s a breakdown of the top models with a history of P0016 codes according to FIXD sensor data. The absence of a model year ranking indicates no P0016 code was detected among the analyzed years, insufficient data, or the model wasn’t in production.
